We aim to build meaningful connections with the children we support, and it’s always special when they return as volunteers. Imran joined Solidarity Sports in 2011, aged 5. In Summer 2024, we were delighted to welcome him back as a volunteer. Here is an interview with him:
What are some of your favourite memories from your early days with the charity?
One that really stands out is the trip we took to the Emirates Stadium. We explored the entire stadium, including the trophy cabinet, which was amazing. The highlight for me was seeing the changing rooms—looking at the shirts of players I watched on TV was a surreal moment. I even got an Arsenal lanyard as a souvenir, which I still have today. I also loved playing games like dodgeball and “valley of death”, I’ve always been really into sport.
You’ve now come back as a volunteer. What inspired you to make that transition?
Volunteering this summer felt like the natural next step for me. I wanted to help the next generation of kids create the same kinds of memories that I have. A lot of the volunteers I had growing up gave their time to make my experiences so special, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. Solidarity Sports isn’t just a charity to me – it’s a big part of my life, like a second family.
What was your highlight from volunteering over Summer?
Without a doubt, the PGL trip to Osmington Bay. Many of the kids had never been to the beach or done activities like Aeroball or going on rides before. Watching them experience those things for the first time was really special. Seeing their smiles and excitement was amazing. I also enjoyed getting to know them, both the younger children and the teenagers. Some kids opened up right away, while others took a bit longer, but I made connections with all of them.
In a sentence what does Solidarity Sports mean to you?
Solidarity Sports is my second family.
